Nothing Sacred?
The Nothing Sacred? Discussion Group is for atheists, agnostics, and skeptics who want to test and refine their philosophical and ethical views by discussing them in a setting where having doubts about divinity is the norm. As a group we are not interested in activism or listening to visiting speakers, but some participants also do those things, and we can put people with those inclinations in touch with groups meeting those descriptions.
We try to not get bogged down in what it’s like to be a non-believer in America these days, and focus instead on:
- What we, as individuals, do believe (until new evidence convinces us otherwise)
- What values guide our personal behavior (most find the Humanist Manifesto to be a pretty good fit)
- How to discuss our views with theists in constructive and non-confrontational terms
- How to deal with language (words like “sacred” and “spiritual”) and practices (ringing bells, lighting candles) that seem to have special meaning to some people but not to most of us
The group started as a spin-off of the Men’s Group of the Fellowship, but we have never felt that people had to be part of the congregation or even the denomination to participate. We have kept it separate from the Men’s Group so that women feel welcome in Nothing Sacred? and so that theists do not feel excluded from the Men’s Group. We have a low profile because we are content with what we are and because publicizing our existence or recruiting new members would be more activist than we care to be. But welcoming people who do hear about us and are attracted by our agenda is always delightful.
