Book: Understanding the Bible: An Introduction for Skeptics, Seekers, and Religious Liberals, by John Buehrens, available at registration.

Don’t worry — we won’t try to read the whole Bible in 8 weeks! We’ll read selected passages and try to see them in context: What they meant in the time and culture they came from. How they relate to the great overarching themes of the Bible. How they’ve been used in art and literature. What metaphorical meanings they might suggest.

#2: Spirit of Life

Led by: Jean Cannella, Rev. Lydia Ferrante-Roseberry
Schedule: 6 sessions, Wednesday evenings, September 26; October 3, 10, 17, 24, 31
Time: 7:00-9:00 PM
Location: BVUUF, Linus Pauling Room
Class size: minimum 3, maximum 12-15
Fee: $10

Spirit of Life emphasizes spiritual growth and spiritual depth. It does not focus on specific spiritual practices. Barbara Hamilton-Holway’s Spirit of Life program includes stories, discussion, reflective writing, small group work, and personal sharing to help participants express themselves spiritually and get in touch with the spiritual aspects of the everyday. Spirit of Life also includes sections with ideas for how to be more spiritually open and worshipful during Sunday Worship. The program seeks to be friendly to UUs of all theological persuasions. The most secular humanists among us might struggle with the language a bit, but the Wow Words the program introduces to express awe and wonder are accessible and inclusive of people who don’t believe in God or a spirit as well as those who do. Spirit of Life is part of the new Tapestry RE program being developed by the UUA. This class is appropriate for long-time UUs as well as for new members.

Insight meditation is the direct practice of mindfulness: a calm, focused awareness of what is happening in the present moment. During our weekly sessions, we will practice sitting in increasing segments from 5 minutes to 30 minutes, depending on the experience of participants. There will be opportunity to share your experience, and teachings from well-known teacher, Jack Kornfield, will be presented. Bring a meditation cushion if you wish; chairs will be provided.

#6: Kitchen Table Discussions: Talking with Your Family About End-of-Life Care Wishes

Schedule: 1 session, Sunday, October 14
Time: 7:00-9:00 PM
Location: BVUUF, Sanctuary
Class size: minimum 5, maximum 30

This workshop will move beyond the completion of documents relating to end-of-life care wishes and will focus on the “conversation” that should be had with loved ones about their wishes and yours. Documents will be available, but the emphasis will be on how to start this important discussion. We will review case studies and may use role playing.
