What Kids REALLY Want to Ask: Conversations with Your Adolescent

Led by: Margaret Pevec
Schedule: 1 session, Sunday, October 12
Time: 12:30-2:00 PM
Location: BVUUF Sanctuary
Fee: $5

As kids move into adolescence, connectedness to parents is critical for positive development. But just at the age when keeping the conversations going with kids becomes more important than ever, kids become more elusive than ever. According to the Search Institute, only 28% of children say they have positive family communication. A key for parents is to let the kids set the agenda.

BVUUF member Margaret Pevec, MA, is the co-author with Rhonda Richardson, PhD, of What Kids REALLY Want to Ask: Using Movies to Start Meaningful Conversations. Join her class on Sunday, October 12 and you will …

  • learn the physical, social and mental developmental changes in your teen’s life — as well as the developmental challenges in your own life — that might negatively impact communication.
  • learn 13 tips for becoming an ‘askable’ parent.
  • learn 12 topics of interest to 10-14 year olds.
  • learn how to use a movie to start a meaningful conversation with your 10-14 year old.

A 9-week writing group for not more than 10 members writing in response to the 7 UU Principles will meet weekly to collaborate, critique and organize the final product — a polished collection of original literature to share with the Fellowship. The facilitator will guide and provide resource suggestions. Writers will consider several facets of writing: discovery, drafting, incubation, revision, formatting and publishing. The goal is for each participant to produce at least one piece of original writing. Each piece will illuminate one of the principles in the form of short fiction, essay, poem, journalistic article, creative non-fiction, memoir, or interview.

Join this writing group to recognize and honor the presence of the UU Principles in your own life, clarify your beliefs and gain confidence in communicating them, extend your knowledge to others, and practice important aspects of collaborative and independent writing.
